What is the proper way to store food?
There are many ways to store food. If you are going to be eating it everyday, powdered items such as sugar, flour, etc., things that critters could possibly get into, should be stored in a plastic or tin air tight container. This helps to keep it fresh and helps keep critters out. For long term food storage it should be stored in a mylar bag and depending on the type of food, with an oxygen absorber.
Why is food storage important?
Food storage helps us to secure our future no matter what may come our way. Whether it’s a natural disaster, job loss, pandemic or anything else that could disrupt our lives to the point in which we wouldn’t be able to go to the grocery store or be able to access food. We already have food stored at home.

What temperature food should be kept at?

Rice should be stored in mylar bag with an oxygen absorber. It can last up to 30 years or more. It can also be poured directly into a 5 gallon bucket with 2000cc oxygen absorbers.
If you intend to store brown rice, it can be stored the same way, however, brown rice will only last about 5 years or so because of the extra moisture content that brown rice has.

How much food should I store for a year?
The best way to calculate this is to physically write out your food needs for 1 month for your household. How many people are in your household? How much food will everyone need each day?
I highly recommend writing this out as if you’re meal planning. Plan out 1 months worth of meals for the household, plan every meal, even snacks and drinks.
By doing this, it will help to determine how much food you need to purchase, as well as how much water.
Once you have 1 months figured out, you can multiply this for the full 12 months worth.
Remember, this isn’t a survival situation, you’re a prepper so you can store as much food as your budget and space will allow. Prep the necessary food so you’re not starving or ever without, that’s the whole point of preparedness.

Do I need freeze food before storing?
If you going to be using the food on a day-to-day basis and not storing it for long term, then sure, go ahead and freeze. Freezing the food might help to kill any critters that might be potentially growing inside.
However, if you are going to be storing it in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber, you do not need to freeze. The oxygen absorber takes away the necessary oxygen to keep anything from thriving inside.
How many oxygen absorbers do I use to store food for emergencies?
If you are using a 1 gallon mylar bag, you can use 300cc. If you are using a 5 gallon bucket, use 2000cc. You can’t use too many oxygen absorbers, but you could use too little. If you’re unsure if you’re using enough, go ahead and add in another one or two.
