11+ Questions Preppers Can Ask to Get Better Prepared
When it comes to emergency preparedness, it can feel daunting to not only get started, but to keep going. If you’re in a rut, no matter what stage of preparedness you’re at, these questions can help you get started or keep going.
How to get better prepared with these prepping questions:
- What do you eat? Open your cabinets and take a look, write a list of the foods you eat.
- What do you drink? Start stocking up on your favorites besides water, like coffee and tea.
- What hygiene items do you use? Make a list and start stocking up.
- What’s your general routine and how could you be better prepared on a daily basis? Like, better situational awareness, carrying more preps in your car or purse/bag everyday?
- Do you use a lot of lip balm? Stock up or learn to make it.
- Do you have a way to charge your phone if the power goes out?
- Can you keep your home cooled or warmed during a power outage?
- How could you cook food in an emergency or disaster?
- What type of entertainment does your household have and how could you increase it?
- Do you have plenty of lighting, like flashlights, headlamps, and candles?
- Do you keep your car gas tank full? Can you store extra gas at home?
Look to your everyday life, your routines, what do you enjoy doing, what do you do everyday, how do you do it?
Then, as we get settled with these questions…it’s time to look to alternatives:
Remember, in an emergency or disaster we want to make sure we can live as normally as possible, this is why we prep!
Start making a list of:
- The foods you eat
- The drinks you like, and start stocking up on water.
- The hygiene items you want to stock up on
- What type of alternative cooking options work best for you and your situation
- Do you have kids in the home or grandkids? Stock up on extra clothing, shoes and other supplies needed of them; diapers, formula, etc.
- The types of cooling and heating options available to you
- If you need to leave your home because of an emergency or disaster, where would you go?Â
Take it one step at a time. Lists are a great way to physically see your needs and wants then tackle them as you’re able to. Crossing things off of a list is addicting! But…keep it real and within your abilities, time, and budget.
The absolute easiest place to start: the grocery store. The next time you’re at the grocery store, grab a few extra items of non-perishable food and water.
Each time you hit the store, grab a few more.
And so on and so forth. Before you know it, you’ll have grown a huge supply of food and water.
You’re welcome to move on to any other tasks or skills at any time. There’s no need to feel overwhelmed. Simply take it one step at a time based on YOUR needs and wants and YOUR budget.
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. This is YOUR journey.
Take SMALL steps towards BIG goals!
In time, it will just be a habit and you won’t really have to think much about anything.
WE ALL HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE.
Just do it. There’s no better time than right now.
For spaghetti I wrap the contents of a one pound box in plastic wrap. Doubley so on the ends then cut directions off box- curved corners. Then vacuum seal it. Label and keep in cool dark place. The plastic wrap helps keep the spaghetti from poking the bag an undoing the vacuum seal, which happened a lot before the wrapping method.
The only thing I would add to this is… When buying extra food items at the grocer, make sure to read the expiry/best buy dates. Get the longest out date possible. Especially when buying BOGO items! There may be a reason it is discounted.
Most all can goods can last years. In humid areas put cans in zip lock bags to stop rust.
