The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse [Book Review]

I was really excited about this book when I first heard of it. It’s what actually inspired me to do my Apocalypse Cooking series on my YouTube.

The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse is a fun way to showcase recipes that you can eat in the zombie apocalypse.


Here are the pros:

-Detailed recipes – Each recipe takes into account that you’ll be cooking this stuff without a traditional oven (or rather, electricity) and they are sure to cite which type of heating method would be best for each recipe. Such as a dutch oven or earth oven. They also try to take into account that you do not have any supplies, for the most part. So they do a lot of ‘bushcraft’ type ideas.

-Fun drawings throughout the book.

-Talks about sprouting and foraging, insects, hunting, etc – It talked about edible insects, as well as edible plants that you can find on your own. Also touched on hunting and fishing.

-Really creative – This book’s creativity as a whole was really well thought out and it covered A LOT of bases with the apocalypse mindset.

-Legit recipes – as weird as some of these recipes are, if you made them, they’d be a pretty dang good meal.


Here are the cons:

-Focused too much on surviving the apocalypse – I was expecting a book full of recipes with foraging, hunting, fishing and nonperishable foods, but instead, half of the book talked about how to survive the apocalypse. It’s a fun read, but felt the time they took to talk about surviving the zombie apocalypse kind of took away from the expectation of the book. There are LOTS of books that talk about how to survive the apocalypse, but very few books that have recipes fit for the apocalypse.

-Not every recipe has a picture – Because these recipes are out of the ordinary, I would have loved for them to focus on creating images for every recipe to have a drawn interpretation of what it’s supposed to look like. Any good cookbook should have significant amount of photos that display what the entree is supposed to look like.


Obviously, this is a book that is more for fun than practicality. I was just expecting a book full of apocalyptic style recipes and nothing else. But, it’s a fun read and definitely something I’d recommend if you’re interested in trying out some funky recipes like, ‘Wasteland Cupcakes’ or ‘Twinkie Trifle’ or ‘Mealworm Fried Rice’. It’s really fun and really creative.

  1. This sounds entertaining, all right. I can recommend a somewhat similar cookbook you might consider, called “Apocalypse Chow.” It focuses on emergency cooking in situations when you have no power – but not long term. Think post hurricane or earthquake. Interestingly the authors are vegan but don’t make a big deal about it in the cookbook, and will point out various recipes where you could add animal protein if you wish.
