The Survival Summit – Survival Land Navigation DVD Review

This is a review of the DVD by The Survival Summit called “Survival Land Navigation“.

I love The Survival Summit. They are personable, knowledgable and crank out amazing informative survival related DVDs. I’ve already done a review of their Escape and Evasion DVD, you can check it out on my YouTube channel. I gave that DVD high praise because it was filled with information that I had never thought of before about escaping and evading dangerous situations.

This land navigation DVD did not disappoint.

Within the first 4 minutes of the DVD, Top Albritton- the host of the DVD – destroys what he considers to be a bad compass:

I laughed! I did not see that coming. It was awesome. It definitely got the point across about the difference between a good and bad compass.

As it progressed, he went into the basics of how to use a compass, such as the center hold. It also talked about several methods to navigate without a compass such as a sun compass, watch compass and needle compass.

He talks about how a compass works off of magnetism and how it’s important not to have any metal objects around so that it doesn’t impede the needle on the compass.

He talks about pace count, which is very important, and also talks about the variables that could affect your pace count, such as night time, elevation, etc.

He goes into detail about the universal transverse mercator coordinate system (UTM) grid zones, which I still don’t know too much about, but of course I know what it is. There’s 60 zones that are separated around the Earth. Then each grid is split into quadrangles.

Then he went into detail about how to read a topo map, even where to go to download/purchase the topo maps.

Then after all this, he goes on an actual adventure where he’s given a poin and then he has to figure out how to get there. This was extremely helpful to actually watch him put all the skills into place to actually move throughout the land. In fact, he does it a couple times. He got to one point, then went to another.

I’m not going to go into too much further detail because I want you guys to buy this DVD and watch it for yourself. He goes into soooooo much detail. You will absolutely learn A LOT.

After all this…I have a lot still to learn. I’ve taken a class or two on land navigation and map/compass reading, but after watching this; I don’t know nothin’! I knew a lot of the terms, but really, I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I need to watch it a couple more times to really master land navigation.

He is very knowledgable and it shows through how he talks. You can tell that he’s not just memorizing a script; he knows this information! And he is a great teacher.

I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of the Survival Land Navigation DVD. There’s also a streaming version.

I’d rate this a 10 out of 10!
