Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Jen and I am an outdoor enthusiast. Since I was just a toddler I have had a huge fascination with nature and have made it my mission to learn all about it. I’m passionate about becoming less reliant on modern conveniences, and learning to become more self reliant. I love foraging, fishing, bushcrafting, cooking wild foods and spending as much time as I can in nature.

You have a tiny cabin in the woods, do you live there full time or is that your sanctuary/off grid/hangout spot?

My husband and I made an unconventional choice to buy land over a home in the city. Few people could understand our desire to connect with Mother Earth on a deeper level. Together in 2013, with family, we built a cabin on our 170 acre woodlot. Neither of us had built a home before and we learned a lot. It is our goal to live off grid at the cabin someday.

Have you always been interested in exploring the outdoors?

In 2015, I started a YouTube channel, TheWildYam. Its purpose is to educate people about nature and to demonstrate, especially to women and kids, that outdoor living is a fun and healthy way of life. Through my channel I have met many wonderful outdoors(wo)men, preppers, and off-gridders on a similar journey, and have made lifelong friends across the world.

What are five things that you take whenever you travel?

My top 5 things to bring with me whenever I travel in the woods are:

1) Compass and/or GPS

2) Personal Locator Beacon

3) Knife with firesteel

4) First Aid Kit

5) Camera!
