Preparing For Changing Seasons – Rogue’s 31 Days To Readiness [Day 14]

prepared for changing seasons

Part of being prepared means being able to look forward and have forethought about what we might need in order to be prepared for ‘such and such’.

For instance, if you live in a hurricane prone area, you’d probably be prepared for hurricanes which are sure to happen every year.

If you live in tornado alley, you’ll be prepared for tornadoes that spring up within moments notice (or no notice).

When it comes to being prepared for the changing seasons, we all need to be prepared. If you’ve lived somewhere for at least a year, you should know about what to expect during specific months. You can also check the average temps in your area by doing an internet search as well as ask the locals.

Here’s how we can be prepared for the changing seasons:

  • Shop for the season, during off season. Meaning, if you want to get sunscreen, buy it in winter when it’s on sale. If you want to get shorts and tank tops, get them on sale during fall/winter. If you’re looking for winter coats, get them in the summer. Don’t prep for the season in the beginning or middle of the season, already be ready for it.
  • Inventory kits at the beginning and end of each season. Make sure you the appropriate clothes for the season, change out food if necessary, change out any seasonal specific gear and clothes.
  • Setup checklists of what needs to be done for the upcoming season.
  • Set a reminder. The best way to accomplish these tasks is to set a reminder for yourself. On March 1st, you’ll get a notification your phone to ‘prep for summer’. You can then pull out your checklist of what you’ll need to do and get started.
  • Do seasonal maintenance. There are plenty of home and vehicle maintenance tasks that can be done throughout the year. Make a checklist of what needs to be done each month/season. Try to break up the tasks by months so you’re not scrambling to do them all at once.

I know it can be tough to think ahead to a different season when you’re currently living in a specific season. For us, it’s near impossible to think about cooler temps when we’re sweating buckets in the middle of summer. But it really does help to already be ready for the changing season. We’re not caught off guard when it decides to change; it’s life as normal.

If you have kids, this is even more important to think ahead. My daughter grew out of her old swim suit so we went to get her a new one in the middle of summer and they told us they were sold out cause it was a ‘seasonal’ item. It was a swim suit in the middle of summer, how much more seasonal can we get? But that’s how retail works, they’re always a season ahead; which is exactly how we should be, too.

Be one step ahead. Thinking ahead certainly has advantages. That’s the prepper way; to conquer tomorrow, by preparing today.

See you in day 15!
