Using Medicinal Herbs for Natural Health – National Preparedness Month

medicinal herbs

I’m a big fan of medicinal herbs. I’ve seen first hand how powerful plants can be for my overall health. Fruits and veggies by themselves have a ton of health benefits. Additionally, there are all kinds of plants that can help aid in our health.

Buying dried herbs is great if you’re unable to grow them, most of us will buy mint, aloe, oregano, etc., those are herbs! I tend to buy them in large bulk sizes, but I try to grow them in large batches so I have plenty to use everyday and dry. Many of these can be grown indoors. You can have a little kitchen herb garden!

Some of these plants will continue to produce as long as they’re being picked from, like mint.

I tend to make medicinal teas. For instance, I’ll steep some oregano, mint and chamomile into some warm water with honey and lemon. It’s an amazing blend that helps boosts my immune system as well as soothes any sore throat.

You can also cook with many of these, like garlic chives, sage, basil, oregano, etc.

Making salves and balms is as easy as placing the dried leaves or flowers in with what you’re making. You could also distill them into essential oils.

Tinctures are typically made with high proof alcohol, though I have heard some making it with vinegar or glycerin. You’d steep the leaves or flowers or both inside of the alcohol for a few weeks. After that, you have a tincture which can be consumed in proper dosages depending on your ailment.

Many of these herbs work great in lotions as they can soothe dry skin, have overall calming affects and so on.

Of course, aloe is great on its own straight from the plant to soothe first degree burns and cuts.

Each of these herbs will be used for specific purposes, so if you’re wanting to use these herbs for something specific, like an immune booster, you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing the right herbs for the job. For instance, if I wanted to boost my immune system, I might consume chamomile, basil, echinacea, oregano, mint, safe, rosemary or thyme.
