What Are 5 Things You Need To Survive – Rogue’s 31 Days To Readiness [Day 12]

what do you need to survive

What do you need to survive doomsday?

More like, what do you need to survive everyday?

I’ve always found survival and preparedness to be interchangeable. We prepare so that we may survive thrive.

There are a few things that people need to prep so that they may survive thrive.

You may have noticed that I keep striking the word ‘survive’. That’s because, if we prep right, we won’t have to survive, we’ll thrive!

Let’s look at 5 things we need in order to survive AND thrive:

Food – This is pretty obvious. Food not only provides us with energy, but it provides with, you know…the honor of continuing to live another day. Just every other creature on Earth, we need food to keep moving forward. While you may not be able to go a few days without food, the longer you go, the more your body will deteriorate. You may not be able to store food for the rest of your life, but you can certainly learn skills in order to hunt/fish/grow/forage your own food.

Water – Without water, there is no life. You can last a lot longer without food than you can without water. This is especially true if you live in a hotter climate. Regardless where you live or the season, you need water 24/7/365. You won’t be able to store water for the rest of your life, but you can learn ways to procure and purify water.

Shelter – Shelter can come from many different forms. The hat on your head, the clothes you’re wearing, an umbrella, a tarp, a tree, etc. However you choose to find shelter from the elements, shelter is extremely important for survival. This is why we have homes, this is why we have hats, this is why we have clothes and shoes; they protect us. What’s your plan for long term shelter? How will you maintain that shelter?

Mindset – How’s your mindset? Are you able to pick yourself up and move forward fairly quickly? Are you able to focus on actions? Do you have a positive outlook? I talk a lot about mindset for a reason. It’s extremely important to understand that our minds can make or break us. Our minds don’t always have our best interests in mind so the more that we can recognize our faults and overcome them, the quicker we’ll be able to move forward.

Security – Not just from people, but from the elements and animals. We make a fire to cook food, purify water and make us feel less alone, as well as keeps (most) animals away. We carry a knife as a tool and as a weapon. We stay close to loved ones and community for comfort, security and strength. Who’s part of your ‘tribe’? What type of security are you relying on?

There’s certainly more than 5 things we need in order to survive, and some might disagree with me on these 5, but I believe these are good starting points, at the very least.

Here’s a bonus – be flexible. Are you able to bob and weave with the punches that life throws at you? Some people are simply unable to be flexible and adapt to change. Adapt and overcome, right? Sure, something doesn’t go your way, that’s life. How can you adapt in the moment and make it better?

When thinking about your overall survivability, think about these basics first.

See you in day 13!
