Easiest Way To Store Food & Water – Rogue’s 31 Days To Readiness [Day 6]

Have you seen day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4 & day 5?

I’m going to make this as direct and simple as possible. People get so inside of their own heads about storing food and water, especially when they’re on a tight budget.

You can get prepared on ANY budget!

There’s no reason to put off preparedness because you “only” have $2 for emergency food and water.

Great! Get 1 small bag of rice and 1 gallon of water. Or two cans of off brand canned vegetables and 1 small bag of rice.

Work out the math and figure it out.

“But that’s not enough!”

I know, it seems like nothing when you’re taking home just a couple things to be stored away, but trust me when I tell you that it adds up quickly!

I’m always shocked at the amount of food that we have, even when I keep inventory, when I actually step back and look at it, it amazes me how quickly it adds up. I don’t do anything differently than what I preach.

Here’s how to quickly and easily store food and water for emergencies and disasters:

  1. Go grocery shopping for your regular everyday items.
  2. Pick up 1-20 extra things that will be specifically for your food and water storage.
  3. Go home.
  4. Unpack everything.
  5. Place the food and water storage specific items away.
  6. Pat yourself on the back.

That’s it. This is a tried and true method that most preppers use.

Now, if you’d like to go beyond the grocery store into freeze dried foods or MREs, they can be budgeted for. For instance, you can head to your local sporting goods store once a month and get 1 or 2 freeze dried items. Add that to your food storage.

Think about the math for a minute.

Let’s say you’re prepping for you and your family. If you buy 1 can of vegetables, 1 can of meat and 1 bag of rice, that will make at least 1 meal. The bag of rice will make more, but we’ll get back to that.

  • 1 can of off brand chicken costs $3.98
  • 1 can of off brand vegetables costs $0.50
  • 1 5lb bag of off brand rice costs $2.48
  • Equals – $6.96 (without tax)

If you go grocery shopping once a week and you get these same items every week, in 1 month you’ll have:

  • Spent a total of: $27.84
  • Total emergency meals for the family: 4

*(though that bag of rice will certainly spread for far more than just one meal)

Of course, we can’t just store food, we’ll want to store water as well. 1 gallon of water is typically $1. So we can add $4 to our monthly food storage bill, assuming you’re purchasing just 1 gallon of water. There are many ways to store water without buying it, such as reusing old (cleaned) food-grade bottles.

In time, you’ll add other things like spices, oils, powdered milk, etc.

Be sure to add variety to your food storage and keep every type of meal in mind, such as breakfast and even dessert! Don’t forget about the morale/comfort food items.

As I preach often, store what you eat! If you don’t eat tuna, then don’t store it. Store what your kids eat, store what you eat and store what your pets eat. If you don’t eat beans, don’t store it.

Store what you want, store it properly, know how to cook what you store and rotate regularly.

And if you have kids, don’t forget the mac and cheese. :)

See you in day 7!
