How to Make These 8 Hygiene Products at Home!

I remember the first time I made lip balm. It was the first DIY product I had ever attempted and once completed, I couldn’t believe how easy it was! I absolutely loved it. I don’t buy lip balm anymore, I just make it.
Since then, I’ve been stepping out into making my own hygiene products to save money and be more self-reliant.
I’m on a mission to live completely without store-bought hygiene products.
Stop buying these hygiene products and make them instead!
Sugar scrub – this is the easiest homemade hygiene product that I’ve ever done and I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner!
You mix equal parts sugar & coconut oil into any container and viola. Usually about 4 tbsps of each.
You can make a bigger or smaller batch, depending on the size of your container. You have a sugar scrub! I use this every other day and other times I need to wash my face, I use castile soap diluted with water. Use it on your face, neck, or wherever! I leave the oil on my face, I don’t wash it off. It makes my skin feel so smooth!
Deodorant – This is again a very easy homemade recipe that I can’t believe I wasn’t using sooner.
All it takes is 6 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tbsp baking soda and 4 tbsp cornstarch. Mix it all together and place it in a container. Refrigerate for a couple of hours to let it set. Apply to underarms with a tongue depressor or popsicle stick.
Toothpaste – Again, something so easy, why haven’t we been doing it all along? DIY toothpaste is incredibly easy to make and effective.
4 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tbsp baking soda and if you want a little minty flavor, you can add in a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Mix it all together, put it in a container and use it every time you brush your teeth.Â
Lotion – There are a million and one recipes to make your own lotion. I recently made a super easy lotion recipe that is legit like store-bought lotion. I also make lotion bars.
I followed the lotion recipe from The Big Book of Homemade Products by Jan Berry. So I take zero credit for this recipe. Please do buy her book! It’s AMAZING! I also love her soap making book.
Take a look at the video down below for the lotion bar recipe.
Soap – Just like with lotion, there are a million and one recipes. I make my own castile bar soap and liquid soap. In addition to several other types of bar soap. Take a look at my videos down below to
Face wipes – I work out often and I don’t always have time to take a full shower, so having some wipes handy is extremely helpful to simply wipe away dirt and sweat. I use these wipes on my children as well. I use them all over my body, too, not just my face.
Cut a paper towel roll in half, place the roll in a container. Measure 1 cup of distilled water, then put about 1-2 tbsp of witch hazel in the water. Then put anywhere from 5-10 drops of tea tree essential oil in with the witch hazel and water mixture. Mix it all together. Pour over the paper towel roll and let it all soak in. Before use, take out the cardboard from the center and pull out the first wipe from the middle. Continue pulling the wipes from the middle and enjoy!
Lip balm – I love making my own lip balm and it’s SO easy! This is the only one of the above recipes that you’ll need to use a double boiler process in order to melt all of the ingredients together. This requires some sort of container, but doesn’t have to be a standard tube, you could put it in an altoids small tin.
Using a double boiler method (I fill a pot halfway with water and then place a canning jar in the water), place 3 tbsp shea butter, 3 tbsp beeswax and 3 tbsp coconut oil in the jar and melt it. Once melted fully, place the mixture in containers. This will create a lot, so you can always reduce the mixture, for example, 1 tbsp beeswax, 1 tbsp shea butter and 1 tbsp coconut oil. You could also nix the shea butter all together and just do the beeswax and coconut oil.Â
The video above for lotion bars, also shows how to make lip balm.
Shampoo – I have tried A LOT of shampoo recipes and most of them were complicated for really no reason and most of the time made my hair way too oily. In my experience, making your own castile bar soap or liquid castile soap and using just that for shampoo has proved to be the most effective option. For a conditioner, use an itty bitty tiny bit of olive or coconut oil on the ends of your hair and wash it out thoroughly with very hot water.
As you may have noticed, there are a lot of similar ingredients to each of these products. That’s a good thing! If you have to make these products often, then all you have to do is buy a few ingredients instead of many different kinds of ingredients.
Do you have any homemade hygiene recipes?
I love lotion bars! I’ve been super lazy this winter, though – instead of actually making lotion, I’ve just put shea butter in a clean lip balm tin and have been using it neat for hand lotion. It does the trick, but sure isn’t as “fun” of a product! :)
Keeping it simple! I dig it.
