Do You Know How to Sew? – National Preparedness Month

Sewing is an amazing skill which can open up so many doors for you and your family.

My 5 year old is learning how to sew and she is good at it! She’s been making easy and quick dolls. She not only finds pride in making the doll herself, but she’s generally interested in dolls, so it peaked her interest to be able to do it herself.
My mom is a great seamstress, she quits, makes her own clothing, she made most of our clothing growing up, all of our Halloween costumes, etc.
I was NEVER interested in sewing until my late 20s. And now my kids are getting into it!
The trick is to find something that you enjoy. I began knitting because I wanted to make my own hats, socks and scarves. I got into sewing more hardcore because I wanted to make my own bags and hem my own clothes.
You don’t have to learn super crazy techniques but learning to sew by hand as well as a sewing machine are going to open up new worlds of sewing clothes, bags, socks, repairing clothes and so much more.
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to hand sew:
It will take practice but don’t give up. It’s so fun! And honestly, sometimes hand sewing is way more fun than by machine. Of course, the sewing machine makes projects happen much quicker!
I encourage you to get a basic sewing kit and start making something simple like a square pillow or sewing a button on those pants that they fell off of months ago but haven’t gotten around to fixing.
Enjoy!
