How to Grow Sprouts & Microgreens – National Preparedness Month

Growing sprouts and microgreens are one of the easiest ways to get some nutrition into our diets without having to grow a full garden.

I’m a huge fan of gardening, but these can be done almost year-round, though those in some areas you want grow lights for the microgreens.

How to grow microgreens:

  1. Fill a long shallow containter with soil, almost any soil will work
  2. Place seeds on top of the soil, almost any type of seeds will grow into microgreens
  3. Either firmly press seeds into the soil or place a thin layer of soil on top of the seeds
  4. Keep soil moist and keep in a well lit area.
  5. Harvest in 2-4 weeks
  6. Can be kept in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.

How to grow sprouts:

  1. Place seeds (almost any kind will sprout) inside of a mason jar with a sprouting lid or with cheesecloth and a rubber band.
  2. Fill with water
  3. Let soak for 12-24 hours
  4. Empty water
  5. Rinse with water every 3-5 days until they’ve sprouted to your liking. Usually 5 days is the max for sprouts before they start molding.
  6. Can be kept in the fridge for up to a week.

I’ve never found that sprouts need light, I’ve kept them covered throughout the whole process and they grow like a champ. I’ve even grown sprouts in a ziploc bag!

Sprouts and microgreens are also great for chickens and other animals.

Growing sprouts and microgreens are a great way to have some nutritional veggies around the house to add to our everyday meals without having to grow a full on garden. Of course, growing a full on garden is certainly a good idea, too when you’re able to!

Enjoy!
