How to Grow Sprouts & Microgreens – National Preparedness Month

Growing sprouts and microgreens are one of the easiest ways to get some nutrition into our diets without having to grow a full garden.

I’m a huge fan of gardening, but these can be done almost year-round, though those in some areas you want grow lights for the microgreens.
How to grow microgreens:

- Fill a long shallow containter with soil, almost any soil will work
- Place seeds on top of the soil, almost any type of seeds will grow into microgreens
- Either firmly press seeds into the soil or place a thin layer of soil on top of the seeds
- Keep soil moist and keep in a well lit area.
- Harvest in 2-4 weeks
- Can be kept in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
How to grow sprouts:

- Place seeds (almost any kind will sprout) inside of a mason jar with a sprouting lid or with cheesecloth and a rubber band.
- Fill with water
- Let soak for 12-24 hours
- Empty water
- Rinse with water every 3-5 days until they’ve sprouted to your liking. Usually 5 days is the max for sprouts before they start molding.
- Can be kept in the fridge for up to a week.
I’ve never found that sprouts need light, I’ve kept them covered throughout the whole process and they grow like a champ. I’ve even grown sprouts in a ziploc bag!
Sprouts and microgreens are also great for chickens and other animals.
Growing sprouts and microgreens are a great way to have some nutritional veggies around the house to add to our everyday meals without having to grow a full on garden. Of course, growing a full on garden is certainly a good idea, too when you’re able to!
Enjoy!
